Book Review - Train To Pakistan

Train To Pakistan is a classic novel written by eminent writer, columnist, humorist and satirist Khushwant Singh in 1956. This book is a hard hitting account of atrocities during the partition of India. I have bought a paperback edition published by Penguin India.

Cover : Cover is showing a steam engine train of India of early year of independence. Though it didn't give you idea about the content of the book but you came to know the effect of this picture after reading the book.

Plot: The story is based in a village Mano Majra on the border of India and Pakistan. After partition of the country Muslims were migrating to Pakistan and Sikhs and Hindus to India. Mano Majra was the only village unaffected by the partition here Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus were all leaving peacefully. Juggat Singh aka Jagga a bad character in police record was in love with Nooran daughter of Muslim priest Imam Baksh. A robbery and a murder happened in Mano Majra resulted in Juggat's arrest under suspicion. Police also arrested Iqbal a political activist from Delhi who came to calm down situation in border villages. Every thing was fine until a train full of corpses arrived from Pakistan. This incident made the atmosphere tense in the village. Magistrate Hukum Singh's order to police superintendent further increased the drift among the communities. Muslims were forced to leave the village. Police suddenly decide to release Juggat Singh and Iqbal when a train going to Pakistan with Muslims of Mano Majra was planned to be assassinated by a group of Sikh youths. Juggat Singh also had a role to play. What he did? What happened to the train?

Review : The book presents an unbiased account of the tragedy of partition. How communities living peacefully from centuries turned violent against each other just by a line drawn on paper. You will realize by reading this book where the seed of animosity was sown between the communities which affect the Indian diaspora even in present time. Kushwant Singh with his simple yet powerful style of story telling left you with some questions to think as a human being. A story which beautifully highlights the human emotions and displays the tragic turn of events with sincerity.

Verdict : A must read of you want to know about the India at the time of partition. It will also help to understand current political situation of the country.

Rating : I would give it a full starts i.e 5/5.

Delhi - Drive, Design and Connect

Delhi is a city which drives you crazy when you look at its age old architecture, feel its zealous past and peep into its mystical history. From ancient architectures to the modern marvels this city offers everything you crave for. The rulers which have ruled India from this city designed it in their own style. Even now in the modern times it is the center of all political and governmental activities. It was and it is the point of connect of people of this country. The special thing about Delhi is that it belongs to everyone. People from all states have settled in this city and has enriched it with their culture and traditions. I like it for its composite culture where a road (Chandni Chowk) having a Temple, a Church, a Gurudwara and a Mosque displays the India full of different cultures living together in harmony.

This city drives in you the real spirit India. No other city offers you the hullabaloo of news makers, the patriotic flavor of armed forces, the charm of ancient world, the charisma of modernity and a sense of power. The city in which flows the fuel of energy and enthusiasm of India. Since this city is driven by power it always remain a focal point of change which helped in churning our democracy for better results. (Remember J.P.Movement, Anna Movement.)

It is designed by different rulers at different times according to their own tastes and comforts. From Hastinapur to Indraparastha, from Tughlagabad to Daulatabad, from Mehrauli to Old Delhi and to Lutyens Delhi it is fully equipped with different flavors of architecture, culture and traditions. In a way it is a timeline of history of India. Most recently the addition of Metro Rail project which have joined, combined and connected different eras of Delhi have given a unique addition to its design.

It is a place which connects with everybody easily due to its diversity. It is this city where the phrase unity in diversity suits the best. You can have Goa's Christmas, Maharashtrian Ganesh Chaturthi along with Bihar's Chath Puja, if there is a glimpse of Bengali tradition during Durga Puja then you have also fragrances of South Indian festivals of Onam, Pongal, etc. There is a busyness of Eid' one road and buzz of Diwali on another. Similarly you have food here which not only connects you to India but to the world. Just ask for anything Chinese, Thai, Italian, Mediterranean, Mughlai, Hyderabadi, Gujrati, etcetera, etcetera and they are available to sooth your palate. Moreover since no one is from Delhi, this city is for everyone and besides feeling connected to traditions and cultures of different parts of India you feel connected to you country and yourself.

This city binds India together like Tata Motors which by providing different vehicle range is catering to the needs of every household of India. I sum up Delhi in words of Prasoon Joshi 'Yeh Delhi Hai Mere Yaar, Bus Ishq Mohabbat Pyaar' which means that this is the city which is only filled with love.

Certificate of Indianness

Certificate of Indianness.

The ruling party and its parent organisation RSS (Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh) have now distributing certificate of Indianness. According to their leaders and spokesperson one who is born in India and who respect Indian constitution, culture, heritage and value is only entitled to be Indian if he follow rules laid by them like having a Khaki nikkar (half pant) in wardrobe, must follow politics of hate and so on. I got a specimen of this certificate which will first awarded to prime minister Narender Modi so that his absence in India should not give wrong impressions about his nationality.

Their spokesperson said that this procedure would be helpful in their earlier venture of Travel Agency where they are distributing free tickets to Pakistan. On question of news related to closing of travel agency after Bihar debacle and the loss in firecrackers brought to distribute in Pakistan he said travel agency is still working and they have sold crackers to Mahagadbandhan at cost price to minimize their loss. 'If Aamir Khan is planning to leave the country, he can contact us for better travel deals.' Mohan Bhagwat will distribute first Certificate of Indianness to Prime Minister as soon as he will return to the country.

Safe Skin Healthy Baby - 2

In a joint family like mine when a child comes, he/she becomes the responsibility of whole family and not just the parents. My involvement and observation of child care prompted me to right one more post for #SoftestForBabySkinActivity. Naturally child's skin is soft because it remains submerged in amniotic fluids and sebum (oil on baby's skin) keeps it moisturized. Thus to maintain a soft skin we must adhere to the natural ways. Vernix outer covering of child which go away in two to three weeks after birth protects child skin from wrinkling inside amniotic fluids and maintain natural oils in the body after birth. As I also mentioned in the first post frequent bathing should be avoided in first few weeks.

Here are some more points which helped in keeping baby skin soft :

  1. Lukewarm water should be used to clean baby skin. It helps in keeping child skin soft and also keeps a child warm which further protect him from Pneumonia, cough and cold. Even when you are using lukewarm water ensure that bath frequency should not exceed in first few weeks or should be restricted to cleansing of diaper area which only gets dirty in an infant. This will protect child skin from much exposure to external environment and hence keep skin soft.
  2. Cotton soft diapers should be used to avoid skin infections and rashes. Cotton let air pass through it which keeps child skin dry. Cotton cloth made diapers are good for this purpose but during winters and in rainy days, it becomes difficult to dry them quickly. Moreover you need to change them instantly because they don't keep skin dry resulting in itchiness, redness and rashes. New Pampers cotton soft pant style diapers is good alternative for cotton cloth made diapers , they are convenient to use without any shortcomings of cotton cloth diapers.
  3. Oil massage before giving bath will not only keep skin soft but also makes bones healthy. You should be careful while messaging for temperature around, cold temperature leads to cough and cold. If possible massage under mild sun rays as intense sun rays may cause skin burns.
  4. Treating baby acne or pimples softly. Baby acne or pimples are not like one we develop during teenage years they go by themselves and squeezing them or applying some chemical lotions may harm baby skin. Pimples or Whiteheads on baby skin are due to fungal infection and not because of excess oil secretion, thus proper baby cleansing is enough for treating them. If you squeeze them they may left a mark or tight the baby skin on that area snatching its natural softness.
  5. Avoid excess powdering. Infant skin doesn't really need powdering just dry clean the area and its done. Powder may stick to wet areas making it prone to infections. Moreover infants if powdered frequently can inhale powder particles which may cause lung problems in the future. If powdering is necessary use natural ingredient based powder which is soft on skin and if inhaled doesn't harm much to the baby.
This points and a mother's love care will keep the bay skin soft and healthy.

“Pampers brings you the softest ever Pampers Premium Care Pants. Its cotton-like softness is #SoftestForBabySkin and allows it to breathe, thus keeping baby’s skin soft and healthy, and your baby happy. ”

The Teacher From Bihar

"You Can't Imagine How This Poor Bihari Boy Climbed The Wall Of This Big Private Institution."

I can still remember these words uttered almost twelve years ago were enough for you to judge the importance and impact of these words on me and my life. His facial expressions and moist eyes are still fresh in my memory. His eyes conveyed his entire story to me in a second. I don't know what others present in that class felt at that time, perhaps some have laughed at his emotions but those emotions touched my heart which inscribed these words for always.

I am talking about my Math teacher of 11th and 12th class Mr. Pathak. He was from Bihar an upper cast who was affected by V.P.Singh's government agreeing and applying of Mandal Commission report in 1989-90. The Mandal Commission was formed to analyze social differences in society which effected in increase of quota of reservation for SC, ST and OBC. Bihar being the initiator of Mandal movement experienced most discrimination on caste lines resulted in neglecting of upper caste students. Mr Pathak being from the upper caste was caught in this politics which lead him to leave his village and state to study in Delhi.

He usually told us the stories of his village school which was devoid of any modern facilities. He was impressed by his math teacher who was devoted to his students even in such a poor condition. He wanted to be like him and teach his village students. The sentence I mentioned above was showing his pain of leaving his native place and his struggle after enforcement of Mandal commission. At that time I was not much aware of Mandal-Kamandal politics, neither I understood his mention of it in the class room, I was just touched by his emotions and experienced his pain of struggle. I think he was driven by his pain of leaving his native place which helped him performing strong in the big city.
This became the reason of pursuing my higher education through correspondence than regular college. Although I secured marks enough to get admission in a good reputed college but my passion was and is writing which I thought I could pursue without a regular college degree so I left my seat for someone more deserving who was nurturing dreams like my teacher from Bihar to teach his people and make an impact on their life.

I never met Mr Pathak after school but two years with him in school realized me that he was #madeofgreat.  He crossed all economical, political and social hurdles to become a teacher of a reputed school which was looking impossible at one point of time in his life. Perhaps one day he would fulfill his dream to open a school in his native village to teach his people. He was a good teacher whom I remembered even today. I don't know why I never met him again but now I think it’s time to have a rendezvous with him.

You can have a rendezvous with Amazan Voucher worth Rs 750 by sharing your thoughts on below question. The best answer will be picked by me and will be awarded by Indiblogger.

The T - Day

World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19th November to raise awareness about the people in the world who don’t have access to a toilet - a basic human need. It also focuses on the health and hygiene problems arising due to improper sanitation. 2.4 billion People do not have adequate sanitation. 1 billion people still defecate in the open and shamefully India is home to half of these people. Poor sanitation increases the risk of disease and malnutrition, especially for women and children. Women and girls risk rape and abuse, because they have no toilet that offers privacy.

In India not only villages but cities are also facing this problem. Even in the capital of India - New Delhi people defecate in the open compromising their dignity, health and privacy. Besides creating health problems, open defecation give rise to safety issues for women and girls. Most of the rapes reported in rural India are of those girls and women who went to defecate in open alone. Some mischievous elements of society waited for such opportunities to execute the ongoing of their dirty minds. Lack of toilets also leads women and girls to compromise their menstrual hygiene.

The lack of toilets is not the only problem. Improper toilets are also a problem. From improper toilets I mean toilets lacking equality. A physically challenged person needs a special toilet, a woman or a girl for menstrual hygiene required a toilet having sanitary pads, so there must be toilet for different needs also. But in a country where even basic toilets are scarce you can't hope for toilets for special needs. Lack of toilets resulted in unhygienic environment which further causes deadly diseases among children thus snatching valuable lives of our children.

Talk shit today to tell the world #wecantwait anymore for proper toilets and sanitation #WorldToiletDay

Apart from government we should also take things in our hands. Ensure those working in your offices and houses as helpers are using functional toilets in their homes. If not you must encourage them to do so and if possible lend them loans to do the same. Those who have relatives leaving in villages check for toilets there and initiate building of toilets in those areas. Government should not only erect toilet buildings but should also take care of their cleanliness and maintenance. #wecantwait more for this basic facility to reach every home so we must act fast and more responsibly.

You can visit World Toilet Organisation's website to know more about this problem and to donate for this cause.

IS - Islamic State or International Slackness

IS - Islamic State or International Slackness.

Paris Attacks on 13th November 2015 which killed around 200 people opened world's eyes to a new threat to the world peace i.e Islamic State or IS. It was not the first attack by IS but it became their 9/11 moment which garnered them worldwide headlines and hours long news coverage. Facebook even offered safety check feature for people affected by the attack and France flag as DP (display picture) for those who want to show their solidarity with Paris and France. For few more days people will outburst their anger on social sites and then terrorism will go out off discussion from public debates.

Islamic State is creating havoc from last one year or so, it has captured a large part of Iraq (including some oil well), Syria and Egypt. Islamic State is involved in killing of innocent people of these nations which forced many to leave their country and demand refuge in other countries. The reckless attitude of America and European countries for happenings in these middle eastern countries have helped in spreading of their terror networks in other parts of the world. They are using internet to spread their hate messages converting many innocents to be their sympathizers and support their cause. Turkey and other such countries are buying oil from IS thus funding them with money. Many NGO's in America and Europe are also providing funds to them. They are using sophisticated modern weapons made in America, Iran and European countries. This international slackness towards their activities is giving them more power and money.

Why World Is Not Uniting Against ISIS For World Peace? #terrorism #ParisAttacks

When Russia attacked Syrian hideouts of IS and drive them away from many parts of Syria neither Europe nor America supported this action. Are they using IS as a tool to spread Islamophobia? The sudden emergence of IS immediately after killing of Osama-bin-Laden is also a matter of suspicion. Why not ban the organization selling ammunition to them? Why not ban NGO's providing funds to them? Isn't terrorism used as a tool to sideline a community which was also suffering from these terrorist attacks? Few know that Beirut in Lebanon was also attacked by IS two days before Paris attacks killing at least 43 people. Attacks in Syrian mosques & residential colonies, Iraq's minorities, Nigeria, Algeria, Saudi Arabia etc were also conducted by IS without much international reporting and coverage.

The time has come to form an international community which not acts as a puppet of developed nations like United Nations. A body which can handle all crucial issues of human right violation, terrorist funding, illegal arm trade, international drug peddlers and other such issues more strongly than United Nation did today. World stood together in tough time is a good gesture which would not be limited to attack on Europe and America. I also support PM Narender Modi and other world leaders' demand to define terrorism to separate it from religion and for strong actions against their sympathizers. Pray for peace for Paris and for the world.

Safe Skin Healthy Baby

With a baby comes a responsibility of keeping him/her free from infections, rashes and other ailments. Keeping your baby warm and nourished thus becomes your priority. Newborn skin is delicate and so is the baby's immune system. Chemicals, fragrances, and dyes in clothing, detergents, and baby products can cause newborn skin irritation, dryness, chafing, and rashes. It is important to select correct products and apply proper care to keep a child healthy. I have witnessed caring of several babies around me, babies of my sisters and brother. Most recently i.e. in August 2015 my Bhabhi (sister-in-law) gave birth to twin boys which mean double responsibility which we all share with her. This recent experience makes me learned if not an expert in baby care.

My recent and past experiences with babies helped me formulate these five points to keep babies' soft skin safe:

  1. Resist the urge to bathe your baby frequently. Too-frequent bathing -- more than three times per week during the first year of life removes the natural oils that protect baby's skin. That may leave baby's skin vulnerable and dry. It may also aggravate eczema. Except for drool and diaper changes, newborns don't get very dirty.  For the first month or so a sponge bath two or three times a week will keep your baby safely clean. In between, simply clean baby’s mouth and diaper area with a little water or cleanser.
  2. Proper Diapering is must to prevent skin rashes. If you don't select a proper diaper, it may leak making baby's skin wet for longer time causing skin rashes. So you must check diapers regularly and changed them if they get wet, let the diaper area air-dry before putting a new diaper to prevent rashes. It is necessary to select a proper diapers and Pampers is an excellent brand for this.
  3. Don't use scented baby products during early months. They may contain harmful chemicals which can irritate baby's delicate soft skin. It is better to select baby products on doctor's advice. Today's babies are more sensitive than they used to be in past so old home made traditional products should also be used with care.
  4. Clothing material for babies should be selected carefully and there is also a need to wash baby's clothes, bedding and blankets separately from family's laundry. Use only baby laundry detergents that are fragrance and dye-free. It is recommended to read labels carefully for manufacturing and expiry dates along with the ingredients of the product.
  5. Message baby's skin regularly, if possible in mild sunlight before bath. This will not only keeps the skin soft but also makes bones and muscles strong. Here also selecting the correct message oil is necessary. Try to use herbal and Ayurvedic products.
It is also necessary to avoid outings during first year. Exposure to sunlight and pollution can also harm baby skin. Above all these points a mother knows best what is good and bad for her baby and she take all measures to ensure baby's good health. Selecting products which are #SoftestForBabySkin becomes her priority.

“Pampers brings you the softest ever Pampers Premium Care Pants. Its cotton-like softness is #SoftestForBabySkin and allows it to breathe, thus keeping baby’s skin soft and healthy, and your baby happy. ”

Modi Lost Bihar Battle

Modi Lost Bihar Battle.

The month long elections of Bihar assembly ended today 8th Nov, 2015 with victory of Nitish Kumar lead Mahagadbandhan. The all efforts of prime minister Narender Modi lead National Democratic Alliance (NDA) were lost in vain. The election which fought on subjects of Chemistry (DNA remark by Modi), Mythology (Lalu's Nar Pishach and Rakshas remarks), Biology (Cow and Beef politics) and Tourism ( Fire Crackers in Pakistan and sending critics to Pakistan) more than political and developmental issues concluded with victory of Indian values of tolerance, peace and unity.

BJP attempted to polarize these polls by bringing Hindutva and cow in between the development (vikas) model. Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar did their best to play caste card and Bihar honor issue which have nurtured them a sweet fruit of victory. It seems the issues which were point of hot discussion in the nation also played an important role in this elections. Bhartiya Janata Party and Narender Modi's attitude towards rising price of pulses, Nepal Blockade issue, award returning and their intolerance in dealing with their critics have cost them a defeat. Every state election is not as important as this one because this will shape the future politics of the country and will help central government to rethink their policies in running the country.

Here are few takeaways from this election:

  • The caste equations which thought to be broken with Modi wave have returned to haunt the nation thanks again to Modi patronage RSS head's remarks against reservation.
  • Hindu and Muslim both understand development is necessary for their sustenance as human.
  • Cow issue was more political than religious.
  • Lalu is not tired and retired, he still has role to play in national politics.
  • Narender Modi as Prime Minister of India must respect the decorum of his post by selecting his words wisely.
  • Indian Muslims have nothing to do with Pakistan and presence of Pakistanophobia proves government's weakness.
  • Awardees who have returned their awards are raising genuine questions. They are not anti- national as portrayed by ruling government.
We have still to witness many ups and downs in Indian politics but I wish all these up and down prove in favor of the country. Till then God Bless India.

BJP - Bhartiya Janata to Pakistan

BJP - Bhartiya Janata to Pakistan

The ruling party of India always comes up with novel concepts to spread their ideas. After successful campaigns of Rath Yatra, Chai Pe Charcha, Achche Din, they have come out with another interesting idea i.e. Ticket to Pakistan to send all critics to government and its policies to Pakistan. They have partnered with Hafiz Sayeed in Pakistan who will receive the people send by them with open hands. When Hafiz Sayeed was asked about how he would accommodate Indians in already populated Pakistan he said that he was sending thousands of Pakistani residence to India from several years after fore-sighting this scenario.

BJP also revealed the hidden meaning of their name as Bhartiya Janata to Pakistan. While briefing a media gathering their spokesperson said that they were working on this type of travel agency even before 2014 general elections. The idea is brainchild of BJP MP from Bihar Giriraj Singh and Yogi Adityanath, Sadhvi Prachi and Sakshi Maharaj promoted it to their full capacity. Now after BJP president Amit Shah's nod party officially announced their travel wing to cater all tasks related to it under Kailash Vijayvargiye who wants Shah Rukh Khan to be the first person to take benefit from this scheme.

This travel wing along with handling Prime Minister's foreign tours would provide free transportation to Pakistan for all those opposed to them. 'This looks like a daunting task but we are fully prepared to do this with RSS support,' a BJP party worker said on promise of anonymity. 'Shah Rukh Khan is our favorite and he will be the first person to get his ticket from Prime Minister himself,' he further added. Opposition is terming it as a gimmick for Bihar poll because none from the opposition have received an invitation for Ticket to Pakistan

It is not yet cleared that this scheme is meant only for Muslims or others could also benefit from the scheme. BJP has also not announced the amount they have given to Hafiz Sayeed for preparing for the project in Pakistan. The people are waiting for travel packages to other countries as well but that seems impossible since India have faced only one partition its history.

Criticism- An Anti-National Activity

Criticism - An Anti-National Activity

A man was building a house. He put the base stone right but as he progressed with side walls, the structured started looking clumsy. His neighbors pointed out his mistakes and he realized where he was going wrong. He changed his strategy, consulted some professionals and then came out with a wonderful building praised even by those who didn't like him.

Another man on some other street was also doing the same thing making a building by his own. He also put the base stone right and his building too became clumsy. His neighbors pointed out his mistakes to which he became defensive and said that he knew what he was doing and they were criticizing him because they didn't like him and his ways. He keep on building in the same way as a result walls start tumbling when he reached the half way and eventually fell down. He looked at his neighbors in shame but now it was too late. Rainy season has arrived and he reached nowhere with his strategy.

Similar things are happening in our country and the ruling party is behaving like the second man the one who is unable to tolerate criticism not even when his labors who were helping him in constructing a strong building returning their tools like our authors, writers, scientists, historians, film makers returning their awards. Their affiliation to other ideologies consider alien by ruling party have snatched their right to protest according to the government. Is abusing them and labeling them anti-national tolerance?

When someone points at your weaknesses, your short comings you must thank them and pledge to overcome your weakness that is tolerance. Taking criticism in a positive way make one a better person. I a democratic country criticism help government in formulating better policies. A government neglecting criticism becomes authoritative. 'My way or the highway' attitude of the government create unrest in people which in turn inculcate intolerance in society. Take for instance increasing rate of road rage, hate crimes, rapes, etc. There is a Hindi proverb ' Jaisa Raja Waisi Praja' which means citizens are what the king is, the PM's indifference to some important issues in society are helping in their promotions and the common man is becoming indifferent to these issues being engulfed in earning bread and butter.

The economy is down, markets are slow even in peak festive season, crop yield is less due to which farmers are in pathetic conditions, inflation is high, property market showing no scope, no influx of foreign companies, estranged relations with two of our crucial neighbors - Nepal and Pakistan, no new employment opportunities and dealing with many other problems is need of the hour. It’s sad that we have no discussions on these issues on national level because those who criticize government for these problems are marked as anti-national.

Criticism uncovers truth hidden behind arrogance and egoism #quotes

If raising these national issues is anti-national then I am also anti-national, if criticizing government is anti national then I am anti-national, if questioning government's intention when its leader talks about Love Jihad, Ghar Wapsi, is anti-national then I am anti-national. Tolerance was and tolerance is the main ingredient of Indianness i.e. the unique quality which have sustained India in difficult times and if it is lost I fear about communal clashes, caste fights, regional discrimination and the India we know today will again gets shattered and tattered into pieces. God bless us, God Bless India.
